Bavaria: duck deaths: heat causes foul gases

Nuremberg (dpa / lby) - In Nuremberg, more and more ducks have died or fallen ill in the past few weeks. The heat combined with leftover food could be responsible for this, as the public space service in Nuremberg announced on Monday. The dead ducks at Eibacher Forstweiher were recovered and are now being examined. Toxic sewage gases at the bottom of the pond were probably the cause of death.

These arise during long periods of heat, when bacteria decompose leftover food that has sunk to the muddy bottom of the pond. The waterfowl then come into contact with these when digging and die. The service company therefore calls on everyone not to feed waterfowl.
