Bavaria: Energy prices: Higher rents expected in student dormitories

Munich (dpa/lby) - The increase in energy prices will also be noticeable in the rents for student residences in the new semester. As a survey by the German Press Agency among the large student unions in Bavaria revealed, a considerable increase in ancillary costs is expected in some cases. Stadtwerke München expect an increase in ancillary costs of around 30 to 40 percent for the 2021/2022 accounting year. In the following year there could even be an increase of 40 to 50 percent. The Studentenwerk Würzburg assumes an increase of 20 to 35 percent.

The increase in the BAföG requirement rate by almost six percent and the heating cost subsidy of 230 euros should bring relief. In view of the inflation, however, the BAföG reform is not sufficient, criticized the Munich student union. An "inflation surcharge for BAföG" is needed, it is also said from Augsburg. In addition, starting this week, the Studentenwerke are calling on students to save energy in a Germany-wide campaign. "There is still room for improvement when it comes to savings," said a spokesman for the Augsburg student union.
