Munich (dpa / lby) - After the sale of 25 life-size aluminum figures of its stars, FC Bayern donated 16,000 euros to the Bavarian Center for Cancer Research. "We at FC Bayern Munich want to draw attention to the topic of cancer prevention. Because it's about us all undergoing a certain mindfulness therapy," said President Herbert Hainer on Wednesday when the check with the donation was handed over in Munich. "The sale of player figures is a successful combination from every perspective. Our fans are happy about the figures of their stars and we can all do something good together with the proceeds."
It is important to sensitize younger people in particular to the topic of cancer prevention, said Hainer. Cancer diseases such as those of BVB striker Sebastian Haller, Timo Baumgartl from Union Berlin or Marco Richter from Hertha BSC are cautionary tales.
Early detection of such diseases is also an issue in the regular examinations of Bayern players, said team doctor Roland Schmidt. "I think the accumulation of cases that we have also seen in Germany in recent months means that the players are of course intrinsically very motivated to have themselves examined. There is a great willingness there."
