Bavaria: FDP questions church privileges

Augsburg (dpa / lby) - The FDP in the state parliament wants to examine the privileges of the churches in Bavaria. "In view of the large number of cases of abuse, the public prosecutor's reluctance and the inadequate church handling of it, we have to discuss the separation of church and state again more intensively," said Matthias Fischbach, spokesman for religious policy for the parliamentary group, of the "Augsburger Allgemeine" (Wednesday). The FDP will set up a working group for this purpose.

"The Church has privileges and influence in many areas that no longer seems up to date," Fischbach continued. He doesn't want a "dogmatically laicist state, and we don't have to abolish any public holidays either," emphasized the FDP MP. The question is, however, whether the Free State really "must pay for clergymen's salaries through lump-sum payments".
