Bavaria: First serious injuries in the tunnel before traffic is released

Oberau (dpa / lby) - Even before the opening of the new car tunnel near Oberau in Upper Bavaria for general traffic, there was the first accident with a serious injury. After the opening ceremony of the more than four-kilometer tunnel on Thursday, a 60-year-old cyclist collided with another cyclist and had to be taken to a clinic with serious injuries.

After the opening ceremony, pedestrians and cyclists were allowed to explore the tunnel before it was opened to traffic. When the 60-year-old cycled through the tunnel, she overlooked another cyclist riding next to her and caused the accident, the police reported on Friday.

The tunnel, which costs 260 million euros, is intended to provide a better connection from the end of Autobahn 95 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Austria. For decades, the federal highway after the A95 has been one of the main congestion points in Bavaria, especially when day-trippers flock to the mountains on weekends and public holidays.
