Bavaria: flood of cats and financial worries: animal shelters are overloaded

Munich (dpa / lby) - The animal shelters in the Free State have hardly any free places. The first institutions had already imposed admission stops, others were about to do so, the German Animal Welfare Association Bavaria reported in Dingolfing on Sunday. "The long-feared wave of sales of pets bought carelessly in times of a pandemic is becoming a problem, as is the increasing number of dogs with behavioral problems that animal shelters are confronted with," explained Association President Ilona Wojahn with a view to World Animal Day on October 4th. Staff shortages and limited financial resources also made the homes very worried.

There is currently a flood of cats. The association therefore called for a Bavaria-wide cat protection regulation with labeling and castration requirements. According to the animal rights activists, a uniform regulation for found animals is also urgently needed. In particular, cost-covering financing of this service by cities and municipalities is overdue, since the animal shelters are thus taking on a municipal obligation.

According to the Animal Welfare Association, the situation is financially tense because of higher energy costs, a new fee schedule for veterinarians and inflationary price developments. In addition, there would be immense burdens from the minimum wage that has been in force since October. The association therefore calls for support, after all, animal protection is anchored in the Basic Law and also in the Bavarian Constitution.
