Bavaria: Foundation stone laid for new prison in Passau

Passau (dpa / lby) - Passau gets a new correctional facility (JVA). According to the Ministry of Justice, this should have 450 detention places, both for the prison system and for detainees awaiting deportation. Prime Minister Markus Söder, Minister of Justice Georg Eisenreich and Minister of Construction Christian Bernreiter (all CSU) laid the foundation stone for the major project on Monday. He described Bavaria as the safest federal state in Germany.

According to the Minister of Construction, the project should be completed in 2027. According to the Ministry of Justice, 350 places are planned for the penal system and 100 for detention pending deportation. The latter number can be doubled if necessary. The existing JVA in Passau is no longer up-to-date and also too small, said Eisenreich.

The minister emphasized that the judiciary makes an important contribution to implementing immigration and asylum law. Because by law prisoners and prisoners awaiting deportation have to be accommodated separately, it should not be possible for these groups of prisoners to meet in the new prison. Structural measures would ensure this.
