Bavaria: Franconian winegrowers officially start harvest

Zeil am Main (dpa / lby) - The Franconian winegrowers start harvesting on Monday. Prime Minister Markus Söder and Minister of Agriculture Michaela Kaniber are also expected at the official start in Zeil am Main (Hassberge district).

In some locations, however, the harvest has been going on for days. In the summer, the vintners were challenged primarily by the heat and drought. Especially in Lower Franconia, where Franconian wine thrives, there was very little rainfall.

Traditionally, grape varieties such as Ortega and Bacchus are the first to be cut from the vine by winemakers. Riesling and Silvaner mature a little longer. Already last year, the Silvaner turned out to be the grape variety that could best withstand the climate change in the Franconian regions.
