Bavaria: Frosty weather leads to accidents: DWD warns

Some were simply driving too fast, others still had summer tires on their cars: slippery and snow-covered roads have led to many accidents in Bavaria. Will it stay wintry?

Munich (dpa / lby) - Winter-smooth roads in Bavaria have led to sometimes serious accidents with injuries. As police spokesman said, many ice accidents occurred, especially in Swabia, Upper Bavaria and Upper Franconia. The German Weather Service (DWD) also warns of slippery roads in parts of Bavaria for the coming days.

A 32-year-old woman from Baden-Württemberg underestimated the wintry road conditions on Autobahn 9 in Upper Franconia. In the direction of Berlin, according to the police, her car suddenly slipped near Berg on Sunday and spun across the entire roadway. The slide ended in the crash barriers. The 32-year-old was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to the police, a 46-year-old was probably driving too fast near Ingolstadt on Sunday afternoon in wintry road conditions. During an overtaking manoeuvre, he lost control of his car, skidded and then left the road to the right. The car first collided with a delineator and rolled over several times in an adjacent field until it came to rest on its roof. The driver and his 15-year-old passenger were reportedly taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

In the Swabian town of Löpsingen (Donau-Ries district), a 20-year-old also skidded her car because of snow and excessive speed. She first turned right into the green verge, then left the roadway and landed in a field. The young woman was slightly injured in the accident on Sunday.

In Kulmbach, Upper Franconia, a 28-year-old lost control of his vehicle in a left-hand bend on Sunday morning due to ice. It went off the road, slid into a ditch and then stopped at a property. The driver was injured and taken to the hospital.

Near Peutenhausen (Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district), a 52-year-old drove with summer tires despite wintry roads. When overtaking another car, he left the lane to the right on Sunday. His car overturned and landed on its roof. The man was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

In the coming days, the sun should be visible more frequently during the day. However, the DWD warned that this could lead to freezing wet and thus slippery roads in the still cold nights. Commuters in particular should drive very carefully in the morning. For Wednesday, the DWD warned between the edge of the Alps and the Danube that there was a risk of severe weather due to black ice.
