Bavaria: government warns of dangers in winter sports in the mountains

Grainau (dpa / lby) - In view of the increasing number of accidents in winter, the state government warns of the dangers of winter sports in the mountains. The goal is to enable winter sports, "but with caution," said Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) on Wednesday on the Zugspitze. Everyone must assess their strength correctly, he warned. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) warned: “It is problematic when winter sports enthusiasts overestimate themselves, behave recklessly or are poorly prepared, also when it comes to choosing tours.”

In the past winter season 2021/2022, the Bavarian Mountain Rescue Service recorded the same number of missions as before the Corona pandemic, namely almost 5500. The number of 19 deaths while hiking and mountaineering was exceptional. One winter athlete died while skiing, and three athletes died in an avalanche on ski tours.
