Bavaria: Grandfather's poison murder: mother and daughter must be in custody

A woman is said to have mixed a fatal overdose of drugs into her father's favorite dish. The regional court in Traunstein sentenced her to life imprisonment. The defense won't accept that.

Traunstein (dpa / lby) - Because she is said to have poisoned her father, who was in need of care, a woman was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder on Wednesday by the Traunstein district court. The 55-year-old is said to have mixed an overdose of drugs with the man's favorite dish - sour Lüngerl - and thereby killed him. The wife's daughter and granddaughter of the 75-year-old victim was sentenced to four years in prison. The lawyers for the two women said they would appeal the verdict.

The trigger was a dispute about the property of the 75-year-old, said the presiding judge. Unlike the prosecution, however, he did not see greed as a motive for the murder. "Their goal was to protect the family." At the time, the 30-year-old daughter of the main accused lived in the apartment above her grandfather and was responsible for his care and support. The close living together has led to more and more tension, the judge said. The grandfather wanted the daughter and her husband to move out. On the other hand, according to the court, the mother wanted to take action.

She is said to have poisoned his favorite food more than a year ago. Her daughter noticed, but did not come to her grandfather's help. The two women had a close relationship, the judge said. It was a difficult situation for the daughter, but she "knowingly made the wrong decision" and did not get any help.

After the death of the 75-year-old, the younger woman could not reconcile what had happened with her conscience. She confided in other family members. This "human behavior" finally led to the criminal proceedings. The victim's relatives filed a complaint and the body was exhumed.

In his closing speech on Monday, the prosecutor spoke of an "almost perfect murder". He accused the accused mother of base motives and malice. The daughter held the public prosecutor credited with a partial confession and demanded a prison sentence of seven years.

After the verdict was announced, the lawyers for the two women said they would appeal. They had demanded an acquittal for the mother and a six-month suspended sentence for the daughter.
