Bavaria: Green spaces in Munich should be better protected

Munich (dpa / lby) - The preservation of green spaces will have more weight in urban planning in Munich in the future. The city council made the decision on Wednesday. The majority of the General Assembly spoke out in favor of taking over a corresponding citizens' initiative, which aims to protect the plants from further sealing and was initiated by the ÖDP, among others. The makers of the citizens' petition, signed by 60,000 people, complained that almost half of the city area in Munich was sealed. Parks and playgrounds should not fall victim to building projects.

A referendum is no longer necessary. CSU faction leader Manuel Pretzl emphasized that planning sovereignty still lies with the city. For example, the government of Upper Bavaria has made it clear that the city council will always have some leeway in making decisions in individual cases. This leeway will also be used, for example when it comes to residential projects that are already well advanced.

The parliamentary group from ÖDP and Munich list spoke of a success. The parliamentary group leader Tobias Ruff (ÖDP) announced that he would monitor compliance closely. The commitment to the preservation of green spaces should not be seen as an election campaign maneuver and empty lip service, but must be actively lived out in urban planning.

The decision had been fiercely contested. She could only be hit on the second attempt. Among other things, there was a dispute about the impact on existing land use plan procedures.
