Bavaria: In the direction of the Alps, it accumulates on the Pentecost weekend

Munich (dpa / lby) - Whitsun excursionists needed patience on Bavaria's roads on Saturday - there was heavy traffic, especially in the direction of the Alps. On the Autobahn 8 from Munich to Salzburg, cars were backed up in the afternoon over a distance of twelve kilometers, as a spokesman for the ADAC in Munich said. Here people had to calculate about an hour more time. There was a traffic jam of about nine kilometers on Autobahn 93.

However, cars weren't just heading south: on the Autobahn 7 between Ulm and Würzburg there were around eleven kilometers of traffic jams in the afternoon. Another route with a lot of congestion was the Autobahn 7 between Hanover and Hamburg. The North and Baltic Seas are also popular destinations over the holidays.

Drivers should also expect traffic problems, especially around Garmisch-Partenkirchen, said the ADAC spokesman. Because of the salvage work after the serious train accident on Friday afternoon, traffic will be diverted there.

Overall, however, there were no excessive traffic jam problems on Saturday, as a rule most Whitsun vacationers are on the streets on Friday afternoon and then again on Whit Monday. Even compared to the previous year, the day was quiet in terms of traffic: in 2021 there were 780 kilometers of traffic jams nationwide on Pentecost Saturday, in 2022 there were 363 kilometers by the afternoon (as of 2:30 p.m.).
