Bavaria: Incidence is falling: hospitals are heavily burdened

Munich/Berlin (dpa/lby) - The corona incidence in Bavaria has been falling for a week. On Friday morning, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin reported a seven-day incidence of 786.0 for the Free State. That is 172.3 new infections per week per 100,000 inhabitants fewer than a week before. Most recently, the incidence had increased with certain fluctuations since mid-June.

However, the incidence figures only provide a very incomplete picture of the infection situation. Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI - mainly because not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values. In addition, the Günzburg district has not reported any figures for around two weeks. However, since it is home to less than one percent of the Bavarian population, the distortion should be limited.

Despite the current decline in the incidence, many patients continue to arrive in hospitals because of or with Corona. On Friday, the number of these hospitalizations was 1397, as reported by the State Office for Health and Food Safety, citing the RKI. This is a small drop on a weekly basis, but still more than at the peak of the delta wave in November and December last year.

According to the nationwide intensive care register, the number of corona patients treated in the intensive care units has recently risen sharply, but is still well below the values from the delta wave. The situation in the stations is still tense: as of Thursday, 81 intensive care units reported restricted operation, 47 partially restricted operation and only 47 regular operation.
