Bavaria: Ingolstadt decide on new theater and new school

A new theater and a new school - is that necessary? On Sunday, the citizens of Ingolstadt can have a say in their city's important future projects. In both cases, opponents criticize that the construction plans pay too little attention to ecology.

Ingolstadt (dpa/lby) - In Ingolstadt, citizens can vote on Sunday (July 24) in two referendums on a new theater and a new school. The city wants to build a "small house" next to the previous city theater in order to have an alternative venue for the upcoming renovation of the main stage. So far, 45 million euros have been earmarked for this. In addition, the approximately 100,000 eligible voters can vote on a new middle school for around 580 students.

Opponents of both projects criticize in particular that green areas should be built on. The Chamber Theater is also criticized for the fact that the building disturbs the air circulation in the area of the nearby Danube and thus worsens the climate in the city center. A citizens' initiative was also founded against the Kammerspiele, which also considers the second Ingolstadt theater to be monumental and completely oversized. "With such a project, which is only useful for a very small group of citizens, a particularly critical look must be taken," is the opinion of the initiative.

The city, on the other hand, considers the new school and theater to be indispensable and the ecological disadvantages in both cases to be manageable. She wants to build the new Kammerspiele with 250 seats. During the use as an interim venue due to the renovation of the city theater, the capacity can be expanded to up to 450 seats.
