Bavaria: Königshaus am Schachen opens after a two-year Corona break

Munich (dpa/lby) - After a two-year Corona break and a comprehensive renovation, King Ludwig II's Schachenschloss opens its doors to visitors again. "After a long winter, the summer season is finally beginning at over 1,800 meters," said Minister of Finance and Homeland Albert Füracker (CSU) on Wednesday in Munich. From July 1st, the mountain restaurant and the royal house in the Wetterstein Mountains will be open again.

The guests can admire the result of an extremely complex restoration or reconstruction on site: the Bavarian Palace Administration has been working on it for more than three years. Now, with twelve divans, six balustrade curtains and tabourets and 23 reconstructed curtains, important parts of the magnificent furnishings of the Schachenhaus can be admired again . Around 150,000 euros were invested in the first restoration.

The original textiles, almost 150 years old, had suffered greatly over time. For example, the covers of the divans showed strong signs of wear, which made restoration necessary. Since the original blue and white striped cotton window curtains were too badly damaged, they were stored as a contemporary document and true-to-the-original reconstructions were installed on the ground floor.

The royal house, built between 1869 and 1872 according to plans by Georg Dollmann on the Schachenalpe south of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, served as a refuge for King Ludwig II when he was in the mountains. Ludwig II celebrated his birthday and name day here every year. The wooden house is built as a post-and-beam construction in the Swiss chalet style. On the upper floor - accessible via a spiral staircase - is the so-called Turkish Hall, which the king had decorated with stained glass windows, peacock feathers, a precious carpet, a central fountain and textiles made of gold brocade fabrics.
