Bayreuth (dpa / lby) - In Upper Franconia, a young man tore down an Israeli flag and stepped on it. A targeted, politically motivated act is assumed, said a police spokesman on Monday. The man deliberately chose and damaged the Israeli flag from among the many flags waving at Bayreuth's Luidpoldplatz. According to the police, the stateless 20-year-old comes from the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel.
According to the police report, the man first climbed onto the flagpole on Friday, tore down the flag and then trampled on it. A witness observed the crime, followed him and alerted the police. The officials reported the 20-year-old for violating flags and national emblems of foreign countries. According to a police spokesman on Monday, there was no evidence of a psychological state of emergency. It was not known whether the man was already conspicuous under criminal law.
