Munich (dpa / lby) - A powerful low pressure area causes stormy weather in Bavaria. The front system brings widespread gusts of wind at speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour on Wednesday, as the German Weather Service announced on Tuesday. The gusts could also reach 75 kilometers per hour, especially in the eastern foothills of the Alps and in western Franconia. In the ridges of the Bavarian Forest and the Alps, severe gusts of wind of around 100 kilometers per hour are to be expected.
This means that the snow in the mountains is likely to be heavily transported, a danger for winter hikers and tourers. Skiing shouldn't be much fun, if only because of the wind. Incidentally, the low will hardly bring fresh snow with it at first: the meteorologists only expect light snowfall and smoothness above about 600 meters. By Wednesday noon in the Bavarian Forest above about 800 meters and in the Alps above about 1000 meters just a maximum of five centimeters of fresh snow is expected, in northwestern areas up to ten centimeters.
