Munich (dpa/lby) - A food rescue association from Munich is the Bavarian state winner of the German Neighborhood Award 2022. The Foodsaving Obergiesing project was selected by an expert jury alongside 15 other nationwide neighborhood projects, said the nebenan.de foundation on Wednesday, which awarded the prize awarded annually.
The Munich association saves food that is still edible from being destroyed and distributes it to people in need. The idea was initiated by a pharmacist who suggested passing on saved groceries to an elderly customer. In the meantime, more and more people in need are coming to the pharmacy for groceries. A delivery service is also offered.
The German Neighborhood Award is given to projects that are committed to their local environment and thus strengthen cooperation, the foundation explained. The 16 state winners each receive 2,000 euros for their commitment. The prizes will be awarded in Berlin on November 17th.
