Munich (dpa/lby) - In view of the energy crisis, Munich's Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) is pleading for a longer term for the Isar 2 nuclear power plant rider with. This means that the reactor could continue to run with the existing fuel elements until the middle of next year at the latest.
"This would at least make a contribution to easing the supply situation for the citizens of Munich even if the situation worsens," said Reiter, explaining the step.
While the Isar 1 power plant block near the Lower Bavarian town of Landshut has already been shut down as part of Germany's decision to phase out nuclear energy, Isar 2 will lose its regular power operation license at the end of this year. In the course of Russia's attack on Ukraine and the associated turbulence on the gas market, however, a possible extension of the service life of other power plants is currently being discussed.
According to Reiter, however, Isar 2 should not run longer than mid-2023 at the most. "A further extension using new fuel elements is still out of the question for me due to the completely unresolved problem of final storage. The CSU's proposal to generally extend the service life of nuclear power plants and to continue operating the nuclear power plants with the purchase of new fuel rods works for me therefore not a question", stressed Reiter. Stadtwerke München has a 25 percent stake in Isar 2, with the operator PreussenElektra holding the rest.
