Munich (dpa/lby) - In the new exhibition "The Bicycle - Cult Object - Design Object" in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, everything revolves around locomotion on two wheels. However, it is not the cultural history that is in the foreground, but the design of the bicycle with its diverse developments. "We will be showing 70 examples that are among the most unusual and exciting bicycles in design history," promise the organizers, who are only presenting the exhibition in the Design Museum of the Neue Pinakothek to the press today, before the gates open to the public on Friday.
Countless people get on their bikes every day, or at least every now and then. "But a bicycle is not just a bicycle, it is not just a commodity, it is not just the most widespread means of transport in the world, but it is also a design and cult object in which technology, function and aesthetics go hand in hand," explained the exhibition organizers. "Bicycle design is closely linked to the history of technical innovations, be it the drives, suspension, brakes, derailleurs or other components." However, those who are interested do not have to jump into the saddle immediately: the exhibition will be on view until the end of September 2024.
