Bavaria: New President for Bundeswehr University

Neubiberg/Munich (dpa/lby) - The Bundeswehr University in Munich is getting a new president. On January 1, 51-year-old Professor Eva-Maria Kern is to succeed Merith Niehuss, who will then retire at the age of 68.

The Austrian Kern has been a professor at the Bundeswehr University since 2007, where she was chair of the senate and vice-president for research, young scientists and sustainable development.

"My goal is to further develop our university in accordance with current and future requirements in a quality-oriented manner and, above all, to make it even more visible in the scientific world and in society," said Kern, who was elected the new President by the University's Board of Directors in May.

The federal cabinet approved the election on Wednesday, as announced by the university in Neubiberg near Munich. Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht will present her with the certificate of appointment on December 19 in Berlin.
