Bavaria: NS People's Court came shortly after Bayreuth: New research

The People's Court in Berlin was bombed - in February 1945, Adolf Hitler ordered parts of the court to be relocated to Bayreuth. Details are now being explored.

Bayreuth (dpa / lby) - The district court of Bayreuth is investigating the past of the Bayreuth judiciary in the Nazi era. More precisely, it is about the special court in Bayreuth, which was set up in 1942. In addition, in February 1945 Adolf Hitler had the senates of the People's Court responsible for high and state treason relocated to Bayreuth. The reason: The building of the People's Court in Berlin was destroyed by bombs on February 3rd. This part of the history of the People's Court in Bayreuth is still largely unknown today, said a spokesman for the Bayreuth Regional Court.

In the special courts set up by the Nazi regime, the rights of the accused were severely restricted and the verdicts were generally not contestable. The Bayreuth special court reportedly conducted proceedings against 255 defendants and imposed the death penalty in 14 cases.

So far, there has been no indication or information in the courthouse about what is probably the darkest chapter in Bayreuth's judicial history, it said. The results of the research are to be made accessible to the public both in the Bayreuth Palace of Justice and at the University of Bayreuth. The accused and convicts should be "given a face".

The aim of the research project is also to shed light on the biographies of the judges and public prosecutors. One hopes to find out why so many judges and public prosecutors allowed themselves to be taken in by the inhuman Nazi regime and actively participated in it. The regional court, the university and the state archives of Bavaria are cooperating on the project.
