The 75-year-old drove his Sprinter onto the A93 near Weiden in the Upper Palatinate on Thursday, the police said. For an unexplained reason, he braked hard in the right lane, which is why a 61-year-old driver rear-ended him. Both drove on the hard shoulder, with the Sprinter partially protruding into the right lane, according to the police.
When the 75-year-old wanted to get out, the 27-year-old truck driver crashed into the left rear of the stationary vehicle in the right lane. According to the police, the older man suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene of the accident. The truck skidded and came to rest across the roadway. The injured 27-year-old was taken to a hospital. The 61-year-old driver suffered a shock. The property damage is estimated by the police at around 70,000 euros.
