Bavaria: Pilgrimage to the Kreuzberg: 180 kilometers with prayer and singing

Würzburg (dpa / lby) - Before sunrise, numerous pilgrims left Würzburg for the Kreuzberg on Saturday - the "holy mountain of the Franks". During the five-day pilgrimage, they want to cover around 180 kilometers, as explained by pilgrimage leader Michael Seufert, who has been there around 20 times. "The community is what carries you there." Together with people from all walks of life and all ages, prayer and singing will be the main focus in the coming days. On Wednesday, a service in the Würzburg Cathedral is planned as a ceremonial conclusion. At the beginning there was a mass in the Neumünsterkirche in Würzburg.

After two years of corona-related restrictions, thousands are making the pilgrimage to Bavaria's pilgrimage sites again this year. The tradition of the foot pilgrimage is a valuable asset. For many participants, it is a fixed point in the year when they think about life. The goal is often to gain strength and clear your head - be it through silence, meditation, prayer and conversation with others.

In 1647, members of the "Brotherhood of the Holy Cross in Würzburg" made a pilgrimage to the Kreuzberg, whose summit is 928 meters high. Devotions and masses are celebrated in different places along the way.
