Bavaria: Police prepare bomb disposal in Regensburg

Regensburg (dpa / lby) - For the defusing of a bomb from the Second World War in Regensburg, the police have been preparing to evacuate around 1,200 people since the morning. In the exclusion zone of half a kilometer around the site, shipping traffic on the Danube and the airspace at a height of 1000 meters are also affected, said a police spokesman on Sunday.

The closure is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The residents are then to be brought to safety and the bomb defused. Police expect the work to last into the afternoon. For those affected, a care center should have been set up in the Donau-Arena since 8 a.m.

The 250-kilogram bomb was found on Saturday afternoon during excavations for a building on private property. It can only be removed after a successful defusing, as a spokesman said.

According to the police, there are no hospitals in the exclusion zone that would be affected by an eviction. Schools and supermarkets are in the area, but closed on Sundays.
