Bavaria: Returning e-scooters to parking spaces is mandatory

Munich (dpa/lby) - From Friday (August 5), users of rented e-scooters must return their vehicles to marked parking areas in downtown Munich. The city administration announced on Wednesday that anyone who parked the e-scooters within the Altstadtring around Marienplatz outside of these zones would automatically have to continue paying for their rent. This could quickly become “an expensive affair”. There are already 24 such parking spaces in the old town, and a total of 43 locations are planned.

"The situation with e-scooters parked indiscriminately in the old town urgently needed to be improved," said Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter, explaining the decision. The new regulation is intended to prevent parked e-scooters “in particular from impeding or even endangering people with restricted mobility”.

The parking areas for e-scooters are therefore running as a pilot project, but should be set up permanently if they are successful. The parking zones created since May have so far been "positively" received by users, said Munich's mobility officer Georg Dunkel.
