Dortmund (dpa / lby) - Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is now an honorary member of the German Football League (DFL). The former CEO of FC Bayern, who played 392 games in the Munich jersey in his career, received the badge of honor on Wednesday at the DFL General Assembly in Dortmund.

"The appointment as a DFL honorary member fills me with joy and pride because, despite all my international activities, I was always a child of the Bundesliga, whether as a player since 1974 or later as a manager at FC Bayern," said the 1980 European champion The 66-year-old wished the Bundesliga "an exciting and emotional season" and "the greatest possible international competitiveness".

In addition to Rummenigge, the exclusive circle includes nine other people who were honored for their "outstanding merits and special achievements for German professional football". Among them Franz Beckenbauer and the newly appointed Christian Seifert, former DFL boss, and Peter Peters, ex-DFL supervisory board chairman. The election by the General Assembly takes place on the proposal of the Executive Committee.

Rummenigge played for FC Bayern from 1974 to 1984. From 1991 to 2021 he was responsible for the German record champions, initially as vice president and from 2002 as chairman of the board.
