Bavaria: Schlappen time instead of Schlappentag in Hof

Schlappentag has been celebrated in Hof for almost 600 years. But the corona pandemic has slowed down the celebrations this year too - there is no big slippery day. A series of smaller events.

Hof (dpa / lby) - Schlappenzeit instead of Schlappentag: For the third time in a row, the people of Hof cannot celebrate their big folk and rifle festival. Because of the Corona situation, which was still uncertain at the time, those responsible had canceled the traditional festival in the spring. Instead, there should be a series of smaller events - the Schlappenzeit in Hof.

The big party for the 590th Schlappentag on June 13th is cancelled, but from Sunday to June 19th the events are to be equalized with several individual events. 18 restaurants and beer gardens are taking part, as the city reported. After all: The traditional Schlappenbier has long been brewed and will then be served.

Schlappentag has traditionally been celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost for almost 600 years. It is one of the oldest rifle and craft festivals in Germany.

In 1430 the Hussites devastated the city. The people of Hof were granted tax exemption for the reconstruction, but they had to set up a vigilante group. However, the citizens only rushed to the target practice on the last possible day - in slippers. Soon the shooters came up with the idea of a festival. Beer is also brewed especially for this purpose - the Hofer Schlappenbier. This should be available in stores this year, but also in many restaurants and beer gardens in Hof.
