Bavaria: search for missing swimmer continues

Berg (dpa / lby) - According to a police spokeswoman, the search for a missing swimmer in Lake Starnberg continued on Monday. According to friends who accompanied him on a rubber dinghy, the 32-year-old from Munich was run over by a motorboat about 300 meters from the shore near Berg on Sunday afternoon and immediately went under.

An intensive search with sonar boats, divers, a helicopter, sniffer dogs and an underwater drone then began at the level of the Kempfenhausen bathing area. However, the man could not be found until nightfall.

"A search for people under water is always characterized by certain imponderables," explained the Starnberg district water rescue service involved in the operation. "So it's very difficult to pinpoint the place where a person went down, even if you were right there." Wind and waves quickly drove a boat away, and there were no fixed points for orientation. "In addition, possible currents mean that drowned people do not sink vertically at all, but are driven away many meters under certain circumstances. This makes it very difficult to definitively determine the area to be searched."

The motorboat has already been secured by the responsible public prosecutor's office in Munich II, and now there should be an accident analysis report. According to the lifeguard, the driver of the motorboat stopped immediately and took part in the search for the missing person. Initially, however, the police headquarters had no further information about the course of the accident and any statements by the boatman.
