Bavaria: Söder pays tribute to the late Gorbachev

Munich (dpa / lby) - Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) has recognized the merits of the late former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. "Germany owes him a lot," tweeted Söder on Wednesday. Gorbachev recognized the signs of the times earlier than others, ended the Cold War and made a long period of peace possible. "He opened the way to German unity without hesitation."

The Nobel Peace Prize winner died in Moscow on Tuesday evening at the age of 91. He was the last General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union until his resignation in 1991. He had introduced the policy of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) and was considered one of the fathers of German unity.
