Bavaria: Special public prosecutor for anti-Semitism successful

Munich (dpa / lby) - Bavaria's Minister of Justice Georg Eisenreich has drawn a positive conclusion about the work of the special public prosecutor for anti-Semitic crimes in the Free State. Senior public prosecutor Andreas Franck is working "very successfully" as the judiciary's central representative for anti-Jewish crimes, said the CSU politician on Thursday in Munich. Since Franck's appointment at the beginning of October 2021, he has initiated 65 investigations of Bavaria-wide relevance. These included cases of hate speech and anti-Semitic insults directed at police officers.

A large proportion of anti-Semitic crimes - 30 to 40 percent of cases - take place on the Internet, said Franck. But the yellow vaccination stars at corona demonstrations were also part of his field of investigation. It must always be weighed up whether these are already punishable or whether they still fall under the Basic Law as expressions of opinion. Franck "successfully worked towards a line from the 22 Bavarian public prosecutor's offices," said Eisenreich.

According to Munich Attorney General Reinhard Röttle, the number of anti-Semitic crimes in Bavaria increased last year. According to this, 353 cases were reported in 2020, compared to 510 last year. Final figures for the current year are therefore not yet available.
