Bavaria: Stadtwerke München increase electricity prices by 123 percent

Munich (dpa/lby) - Stadtwerke München will increase its electricity prices by 122.7 percent from January 1st. A two-person household with a consumption of 2500 kilowatt hours per year would then have to pay 1676 euros instead of the current 753 euros, the public utility company (SWM) announced on Thursday. The reason for the price increase is the high retail prices, increased fees for the network operators and the higher statutory levies. SWM is the basic supplier in the state capital, but has nationwide distribution.

The federal government is planning an "electricity price brake" for part of the current consumption. As soon as this has been specified and regulated by law, it will be passed on in full, SWM emphasized.

"Should anyone have difficulties paying the electricity bill, we ask that you contact us as soon as possible. Together we will find a solution, such as an installment plan, postponing the payment date or using the various social support options," said customer service manager Stefan pigeon. SWM boss Florian Bieberbach said: "We will not turn off anyone who contacts us and tries to find a constructive solution."

Other electricity suppliers are also increasing their prices significantly. According to a spokeswoman, the Association of Bavarian Energy and Water Industries (VBEW) assumes "that electricity prices will double".
