Bavaria: Storm: flooded basements and flooded streets

Kempten/Garmisch-Partenkirchen (dpa/lby) - Heavy rain flooded numerous streets in southern Allgäu on Thursday. A spokesman for the police headquarters in Swabia South/West reported in the afternoon about operations in the Oberstaufen, Immenstadt and Sonthofen areas. "There's a thunderstorm, it's hail and a strong wind is blowing." The storm continued eastward late in the afternoon. For the Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberau area, the first emergency calls were received in the late afternoon because of a flooded basement, as the shift manager of the Oberland integrated control center (ILS) said. The hail also smashed the skylight.

The German Weather Service had warned of extreme thunderstorms in the region. The DWD announced that there was a risk of flooding, hail and lightning up to 6 p.m., especially on the edge of the Alps in the Allgäu towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Warning level four out of four applies. Trees could be uprooted and roofs damaged. Falling branches, roof tiles or objects flying around are a danger. Landslides are also possible, people should close windows and doors and avoid being outdoors as much as possible.
