Bavaria: Suspected burglar swims through the Regnitz

Erlangen (dpa / lby) - The police arrested a suspected burglar in Erlangen in Central Franconia, who also swam through the Regnitz to escape. The man is said to have broken into the basement of an apartment building on Tuesday morning, police said. The 29-year-old fled when a resident surprised him there.

Together with a passer-by, the resident pursued the alleged burglar and they called the police. Emergency services arrested the man not far from the scene of the crime. A police dog was also used. The man suffered minor injuries when arrested. Because he also swam through the nearby Regnitz during his escape, the fire brigade helped in the search for the prey. The emergency services found a bag with suspected stolen goods.

The police are now investigating, among other things, because of the suspicion of the particularly serious case of theft and are checking whether the man could be responsible for further break-ins. The suspect is to be brought before an investigating judge on Wednesday to clarify whether he will be remanded in custody.
