Bavaria: suspected investment fraudsters arrested: high damage

Bamberg/Fürstenfeldbruck (dpa/lby) - Bavarian investigators have arrested three suspected members of a Cypriot gang of investment fraudsters. The two women and the man are said to have defrauded German investors of amounts in the millions, said the Central Office Cybercrime Bayern (ZCB) at the Bamberg Public Prosecutor's Office on Monday.

All three had been extradited to Germany and were in custody, it said. The ZCB brought charges against the two women, aged 28 and 32, in November. According to the investigators' findings, the alleged scammers operated from a call center in the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", which is not controlled by the Cypriot government.

A suspected injured man from the Upper Bavarian district of Fürstenfeldbruck had filed a complaint in January 2022, as the ZCB announced. According to the information, he had previously invested around half a million euros on a trading platform on the Internet. But he was never paid anything.

In April 2022, federal police officers arrested the 32-year-old suspect at Frankfurt Airport. According to the investigators, it caused damage of around 1.7 million euros. The 28-year-old woman was arrested by Cypriot authorities in Nicosia in July. She is said to have cheated investors by around 200,000 euros. The 36-year-old man was arrested by the police in Greece in August.
