Traunstein (dpa / lby) - They probably only stole a little money - but they carelessly threw away the valuable offering box. In December 2022, thieves stole the historic offering box from the St. Oswald Church in Traunstein. The approximately 500-year-old piece, estimated to be worth around 5,000 euros, has now been found almost intact in downtown Traunstein, the police said on Tuesday.
The loot of money may have been small. "Sacrificial hives are emptied regularly," said a police spokesman. "There's never much in it." The thieves had used brute force and ripped the offering box from its ground anchorage; a massive floor panel broke in two. He will now be returned to the Church.
For weeks this year, metal crosses and holy water containers were stolen from several cemeteries in the Traunstein district. In February, officers from the Traunstein police station arrested members of a gang who are said to have committed various thefts from cemeteries and churches. Several suspects are in custody.
