Munich (dpa/lby) - In the coming night it could be smooth in many places in Bavaria: The German Weather Service (DWD) warned on Tuesday for southern Bavaria of impairments in road and rail traffic due to freezing rain. Especially in Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria and Swabia, branches could also break off and fall down in forests due to too much ice.
The cause is a so-called borderline weather situation: Arctic air is moving towards Germany, but a low brings significantly milder temperatures from the south-west. This warm air causes precipitation. It's snowing, but freezing rain is possible in the southern foothills of the Alps, among other places.
According to the information, the warm air could possibly penetrate as far as the southern foothills of the Alps during the day, so that temperatures of up to four degrees are possible there. Farther north it stays in permafrost. In the night on Thursday there could be problems again in the south due to ice.
