Bavaria: Water rescue warns against diving into the cool water

Starnberg (dpa / lby) - The water rescue service warns against jumping headlong into a lake to cool down on hot days. A 20-year-old injured himself in such a dive near Starnberg on Tuesday night. As reported by the police and the water guard, the young man was flown to a clinic by rescue helicopter on suspicion of a spinal injury. It was not known how the patient was doing afterwards.

The 20-year-old jumped into Lake Starnberg from a bathing jetty late in the evening. According to the water rescue service, he headed into the water, which was not even a meter deep at the moment due to the persistent drought. "Obviously he hit his head on the ground," reported Oliver Jauch from the Starnberg district water rescue service. "Because he was floating motionless in the water after the jump, he was brought ashore by other bathers."

According to Jauch, bathers have been injured in the past few weeks because of the low water. Most of the time, the swimmers injured their ankles "because they underestimated how fast and with what force they hit the ground." In addition to the risk of injury, there is also a risk of circulatory problems when jumping into the water, which could be caused by the sudden cold shock.
