Jahn Regensburg receives the next low blow in the relegation battle. Coach Mersad Selimbegovic does not lose optimism - although Jahn is on the brink of the 3rd division.
Regensburg (dpa / lby) - Regensburg's coach Mersad Selimbegovic wanted to quickly push aside the next bitter defeat in the 2nd Bundesliga with combative slogans. "We'll have to shake it off somehow in the next few weeks," said Selimbegovic after SSV Jahn Regensburg's 0-1 (0-1) draw against Fortuna Düsseldorf. The Jahn coach emphasized that it was painful. But he couldn't fault the team much.
But the facts speak for themselves: it was the tenth winless game in a row. And with SV Sandhausen's 1-1 draw against Holstein Kiel, Regensburg are bottom of the league after the 23rd matchday. "You have to be aware of the situation that we only have finals and urgently need to score points," warned Regensburg captain Benedikt Gimber after the home defeat. "It's difficult to find words for it. Of course it wasn't a brilliant achievement, but we're investing so much," groaned the midfielder.
Jahn was by no means without a chance against Fortuna. Striker Aygün Yildirim probably had the best opportunity, hitting the crossbar with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 7th minute. In addition, Fortuna had a secure backing in goal with Florian Kastenmeier. He defused several dangerous long-range shots from the Regensburg attacking players. "We're always so close," complained Selimbegovic. But like in the past few weeks, Jahn lacked that little bit of luck. "If you have shit on your foot, you really have shit on your foot," said the Jahn coach.
When asked how his players are supposed to get the crap off their feet, Selimbegovic replied: "Work!" Because the 40-year-old does not want to make success dependent on luck alone. The last determination and cleverness were missing against Düsseldorf - and that in the decisive phase.
When there were many indications of a goalless game, Regensburg's Konrad Faber came a step too late in his own penalty area against Düsseldorf's Felix Klaus and brought down the opponent. Fortuna striker Dawid Kownacki converted the penalty kick that was due. With the goal in minute 86, Düsseldorf's match winner increased Regensburg's relegation worries even more.
