Bayern: Job offer: New Fürth coach Schneider "was surprised"

Fürth (dpa / lby) - The new coach of SpVgg Greuther Fürth, Marc Schneider, was amazed by the interest of the Bundesliga relegated team. "I was surprised when the call came," Schneider told the "kicker" (Thursday edition) in an interview. The Swiss previously worked for SK Beveren in Belgium and FC Thun in Switzerland, he succeeded Stefan Leitl (Hannover 96). The job offer is "a great honor".

With the "clover leaf" Schneider wants to play "offensive, attractive, intensive football" in the 2nd Bundesliga. The 41-year-old calls for reinforcements on the defensive: "You need a good foundation for a successful season, and that starts in defence."

Central defender Gideon Jung missed almost the entire last season due to injury and will be "out longer" in the upcoming season.

On the offensive, Schneider relies on captain Branimir Hrgota. However, the Swede, who moved to Fürth in 2019, is flirting with a move to the upper house. "As a former player, I understand that," said Schneider. Nevertheless, he wanted to "convince him to stay here. He knows what he has in Fürth, what standing he enjoys in the club, the coaching staff and the team." Hrgota had scored nine goals and prepared six goals in the past season.
