Bearnaise Valleys: Herders go to the mountains

The Institution patrimoniale du Haut-Bearn is organizing support for pastoralism as usual. The IPHB would like to inform the 217 summer pastures that are listed of the aid available. The device covers the entire Bearn valleys Ossau, Aspe, and Baretous, and 72 summer pastures are only accessible by foot. It takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to walk.

Transport by mule will be used to transport cheeses and other supplies during the summer pasture period. The cost of this service is 10% for breeders.

Helicopter winching is another service that can be provided during mountain pastures. This service is provided by the IPHB since 1998. Breeders are required to participate at 30%.

The IPHB will also oversee the maintenance and upkeep radiotelephone relays in mountain pastures, which allow for the breaking of isolation and ensuring safety in the mountains.

The institution organizes monitoring water quality in summer pastures for cheese production.

If a breeder is not registered yet, they can contact the Institution Patrimoniale du Haut-Bearn maison des Vallees 2, rue des Barats 64400 Oloron-Sainte-Marie. Telephone: 05 59 39 21 26.
