BYU Police stated that the failed DIY project took place Sunday afternoon. The police said that the resident was making homemade rocket fuel when the volatile mixture suddenly burst into flames.

Police stated that the explosion caused flames to engulf the stove's ceiling and walls. The intense heat also triggered the fire sprinkler system. "Firefighters quickly secured this area and were able extinguish the flames from the fire. Campus police have taken photos showing explosion marks on the ceiling, stove hood and cabinets. A tripped sprinkler system caused flooding in the living room, which has an open-lidded toilet adjacent to the couch.

Although no one was hurt, 22 residents of the dorm had to be evacuated due to "extensive damage" to their building.

Police said that they would keep the experiments safe and have them supervised by professionals. They called the incident "Rocket Man". "... It is obvious that this situation could be much worse, and we are thankful that no one was hurt.

According to CBS affiliate KUTV, the man responsible for the incident was a 22-year old man. According to police, it is not clear why he made the fuel.

Jeff Long, spokesperson for BYU Police, stated that "we don't know the answer today" until an investigation is completed into what he did with this fuel. Although he doesn't believe that there was any harm in the fuel, he said criminal charges could be brought against him.

Long stated to KUTV, "We are not going to rule it out." "It was certainly reckless," Long stated.
