Car runs into New Orleans parade crowd, police say

A pickup truck plowed into a crowd of persons watching a parade in New Orleans, injuring extra than 20 people, officials mentioned.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Orleans and Carrollton Avenue, where men and women had been watching the Krewe of Endymion parade.

New Orleans Police Department Chief Michael Harrison mentioned one person is in custody and he is getting investigated for driving while intoxicated. He mentioned police do not not suspect terrorism.

"We suspect that that topic was hugely intoxicated," Harrison stated. "He is in custody. He is getting investigated correct now and is at our DWI workplace."

Leslie Capo, a spokesperson at LSU Wellness New Orleans, stated that New Orleans EMS stated they transported 21 individuals to 10 hospitals, and seven individuals declined remedy.

Among the injured was a cop, the police chief said.

"1 police officer was struck by a automobile," Harrison mentioned. "The mayor and I have gone to one hospital, we did manage to speak with her, she was in great spirits but is injured."

New Orleans mayor tweeted that the driver was drunk, and that "We are grateful that no a single suffered any life threatening injuries."
