Celebrations Romería del Rocío 2023: when it is celebrated, dates and transfer of the Virgin

Fifty days after the end of Holy Week comes the festival of Pentecost. During that weekend the Romería del Rocío also takes place, one of the most massive Marian pilgrimages in Spain that is celebrated in honor of the Virgen del Rocío.

The Rocío Pilgrimage 2023 is held from Friday 26 to Monday 29 May. As is tradition, the path is traveled on horseback, in a cart or on foot through ancient trails near the Guadalquivir and up to the sanctuary of the Blanca Paloma, located in the village of El Rocío, 17 kilometers from the town of Almonte ( Huelva).

The brotherhoods will go to the village of El Rocío on Saturday to participate in the Rocío acts. There are four fundamental routes to get there: the Sanlúcar road, crossing the Doñana National Park and used by pilgrims from Cádiz; the Camino de los Llanos, which goes from Almonte and is the oldest; the road to Moguer, for those leaving Huelva; and the Sevillian path, the most used by brotherhoods from the rest of Spain and the world.

Next, the calendar of acts and cults of the Romería del Rocío 2023:

The most emotional moment takes place in the early hours of Monday. It is about the Procession of the Venerable Image of Our Lady of El Rocío, on the shoulders of the people of Almonte, through the streets of the village. The processional departure of the Virgen del Rocío begins with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 12:00 after the traditional jump over the fence and concludes, when the virgin enters, with the recitation of the popular farewell salve.
