County Tyrone man, 33 was jailed for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl

A man who abused a teenager girl in her County Londonderry home was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment.

Emmet James Potter (33), of Camlough Road, Pomeroy County Tyrone, has admitted to one count sexual assault. This occurred on 27/12/2018

According to the court, Potter entered Potter's room while she was sleeping in her family's bedroom.

According to reports, the victim fought off the defendant before awakening her mother and raising alarm.

Londonderry Crown Court heard the defendant tell his mother to leave, and he did. However, he returned to Coleraine to give the victim money.

The victim was interviewed and the incident was reported to police.

The victim's mother was informed by her neighbors the next day that Potter, a man she later identified as Potter had attempted to enter two houses.

The judge gave Potter credit for his guilty plea and said that the offense was aggrieved because it took place in the victim’s home, where she should be safe.

He said to the defendant, "What concerns me is your lack of empathy and remorse."

The judge stated that the custody threshold was passed. He also said that he didn't believe that a community-based sentence, or a suspended sentence, would be appropriate.

Potter was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment, with half of the time in custody and half on licence.

He was also required to sign the sex offender register for a period 10 years, and to observe a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for a five-year period.
