Culture When is the 2023 Book Fair in Madrid: dates, times and signatures

The Parque del Retiro in Madrid is preparing to host the 82nd Madrid Book Fair from Friday, May 26 to Sunday, June 11. In this 2023 edition, nearly 1,000 publishing labels participate, distributed among the 361 booths of online exhibitors and the 24 in the central area.

With the motto We are science and letters, the Madrid Book Fair 2023 will also organize various activities, including the opening table --with writers such as Agustín Fernández Mallo or Andrés Neuman, among others. In addition, for the first time, it will have two locations with five signature spaces (instead of the usual four) and two municipal buildings for activities: Casa de Fieras and Pabellón de los Jardines Cecilio Rodríguez. Thus, and under the heading Vaiven de la Feria, a set of activities will be organized that will bring literature closer to older people who make up the Fundación Germán Sánchez Ruipérez.

On the other hand, the 2023 Book Fair will also pay tribute to cartoonist Francisco Ibáñez who will receive the Loyalty Award in this edition to recognize his career.

One of the novelties of this edition is that part of the route will be covered by tarpaulins with which it is expected to alleviate the effects of the high temperatures in June on exhibitors and visitors.

Founded in 1933 as part of the Cervantine Week events, the Madrid Book Fair is the largest book fair in Spain and a benchmark for other international events, especially in the Ibero-American sphere.

"The Fair has as its objective the dissemination of the book, so it will be sold with a ten percent discount throughout this week," published a newspaper at the time. "So much time later, the objective (and the discount) is still valid, as is the chosen formula, that of taking the book out on the street, turning the city into a huge open bookstore," explains its current director, Eva Orúe. .

Since 1967 it has been held in the Parque de El Retiro and since 1982 it has been held under the direction of the Madrid Bookstores Association, in collaboration with publishers and distributors.

The Fair, which in 1934 was called "national and Hispanic-American", in 1944 was renamed the National Book Fair. However, it would be in 1982 when it consolidated with its current name.
