Cycling. Tom Dumoulin (2nd Tour de France 2018) will retire at the close of the season

There was a small thunderclap in the peloton. Dutchman Tom Dumoulin was one of the leaders in the Jumbo-Visma form of Primoz Roglic, and Wout van Aert. He announced Friday that he would be ending his career at 2022. He will be 32 years old.

Dumoulin was the first Dutchman to win Tour of Italy 2017, and runner-up behind Bradley Wiggins at the 2018 Tour de France. He had also been a victim of burnout, and had already disengaged himself from the peloton by the beginning of 2021.

With the aim of shining at the Tokyo Olympics, he finally returned to the peloton. As in 2016, the Japanese roller-climber took home the silver medal in time trials.

Dumoulin explains that he can't find the same level as he was a few years back and is now "tired" of this situation.

Tom Dumoulin won the Giro 2017 along with his two Olympic silver medals. He also holds a title of time trial world champion (2017) as well as stage wins on all three Grand Tours.
