Defense Spain will participate in the joint purchase of ammunition for the countries of the European Union

The Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, has signed this Wednesday the document to adhere to the joint purchase of ammunition together with the rest of the countries of the European Union. A total of 18 Member States reached an agreement last Monday to carry out a joint purchase of supplies, however, Spain did not join due to a technical issue.

As stated by the Ministry of Defense in a press release, "once the mandatory administrative formalities have been completed" Robles has signed the agreement for the collaborative acquisition of ammunition from 18 of the 27 countries that make up the Union.

This is a project put on the table by the High Commissioner of the European Union, Josep Borrell, to find a solution to the lack of ammunition in Ukraine. Thus, Borrell proposed that the allied countries give up the stock they already have in their warehouses and then make a joint purchase of more ammunition so as not to be left unprotected. This, on the one hand, would help Ukraine quickly and on the other would lower the price of ammunition for the countries of the European Union, by making a joint purchase that would also reduce delivery times.

This is the first time that the European Union has jointly purchased ammunition. 2,000 million euros will be allocated to the project, which will come from the European Fund for Peace, to which Spain has already donated close to 300 million. On the other hand, the national Executive promoted a strategic ammunition reserve a few weeks ago for which it will allocate 7.6 million euros, which will be invested in the acquisition of 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition.
