Dordogne Valley, Bessede Forest: Follow-up fishing in Moulant and Vert

The Joint Syndicate of Studies and Works for the Development and Protection of the Dordogne River (Smetap), called upon the Fishing Federation agents to conduct a fishing inventory to determine the number of brown trout in the streams of Saint-Cyprien's Moulant and Vert, both in Allas-les-Mines.

Brown trout are what are known as a marker fish. They help determine the health of waterways. This operation was carried out Wednesday, May 25, and consisted in scientific electric fishing to identify individuals.

The Dordogne river bed was used to release the trout that were older than the adults. Next, 1,000 fry were released from the Mouleydier fish farms. Upstream improvements were made to the streams by placing rocks and planting willows. This helped to improve the habitat for the brown trout, which prefers cool water and needs to hide.

Smetap diagrams indicated a growing trout population at the Moulant (six in 2011 against 120 in 2022), and a declining Green population (114 trout in 2013 versus 10 in 2022).
